Cooler nighttime temperatures mean the end is near to another vegetable gardening season
The plants in my terrace herbaceous plant garden are slowing down , but I have to start rush up . There ’s no time to waste at the end of the season if I want to make the most of those delicious herbaceous plant before they call it quit .
I ’ve been interfering in the kitchen . There ’s a lot of pickling , roasting , canning , freezing and drying fail on around here .
In addition to making sure not a single unfermented veggie run low to waste , I ’ve been busybodied in the herbaceous plant garden , too . If I want to use all those gorgeous culinary herb this winter , I have to keep clipping , snipping and drying .

There ’s an abundance of basil , thyme , tarragon , chives , rosemary , sage and oregano . Here are three spry and easy way to preserve these herb :
1 . Hang them up . Clip herbs like St. Basil and sage in the morning while the leaves are at their freshest . Sort through the parting and discard any that are damaged from worm or disease . Wash gently and pat teetotal with a paper towel . Then packet in clustering , tie with a rubber banding and hang them in a cool position to dry out . An average alloy apparel hanger and a few clothes pins make a inexpensive herbaceous plant drier .
When herbaceous plant are crunchy dry , remove whole leaves from the stems and computer storage in an airtight container away from the light . Wait to crush herbs until using them in cooking .

2 . Lay them down . Another way to dry herbs like oregano , rosemary and thyme is to sort them , rinsing , pat ironic and place them on a dry out screen where air can circularise around them . A simple alternative is to place them on a paper towel wee-wee certain not to push them . Smaller leaves will dry out in just a few day .
3 . Microwave them . The cutter leaves of some herbaceous plant , like chives , call for a slightly different method for dry . I ’ve tried hanging them or point them on a screen , but they lose their color . The solution is to screen , washing , dry and lop them into half - column inch pieces and spread them on a paper towel in the microwave oven . Cover with a 2d newspaper publisher towel and zap on in high spirits for 40 second gear . Check for dryness and continue in 20 - 2nd increase until the chives are nearly dry . Allow them to air dry completely before storing in a jounce or other airtight container .
There are other methods forpreserving chive , like mixing them into butter and freezing .
