For over 40 geezerhood , Pennsylvania - base ecologist and horticulturist Rick Darke has been analyze and photograph North American plant life in divers habitats . Darke , who refer to his work as “ landscape painting ethics , ” confer on the honourable construct , design , and direction of public and private landscape . Here , we tour his 1.5 - acre holding in Landenberg , Pennsylvania that he shares with his married woman Melinda Zoehrer .
As you face through this gallery of photographs of their garden , keep in mind that it is thoroughly sustainable . It is weedkiller and pesticide destitute . Darke and Zoehrer do n’t swear on others for armed service ; they do everything themselves . It ’s full of many natives ( but the garden is not entirely aboriginal ) . There is no concrete or mortar anywhere — only teetotal , laid pit . And , arguably one of the most impressive facts of all : Absolutely no part of this garden is irrigated .

Above:“Many old age ago , landscape architect Bill Frederick distinguish me that there are different types of gardens , ” Darke say . “ Some are for view — you’re intend to admire them , but do n’t really go out into them . The eccentric that appealed to me was the melodic theme of a promenade garden . That ’s what we ’ve created here . We take the air doubly a 24-hour interval in our garden , and each prison term we have something unlike . It ’s an extension of our house — we practically live in it . ”
The stonework , local Pennsylvania bluestone , in this shady spot of the garden “ is an invitation to the space from where the photograph is being taken — there ’s a bench there and it ’s one of many destination in the garden , ” tell Rick Darke . Plants surround the tract : woodland geranium ( Geranium maculatum ) , whitewood asters , pinkish root ( Spigelia ) , many ferns , and azaleas . Darke and Zoehrer ’s house is in the ground . “ Those are our large bedroom window looking out into the garden , ” Darke say .
Above : The stone pathway ( also shown in the late icon ) leads to this sitting goal . Garden stroller can continue along the pine needle path that Darke and Zoehrer maintain . “ Whenever our true pine discharge needles heavily , I harvest about two wheelbarrows full and use them to redo the pathway , ” Darke says .
Above : Though the itinerary is not steep , there is just enough of a grade change for weewee to create erosion over time . “ When I redo this infinite , I worked the ground to be sure the piss would spill into the bed , ” Darke says . “ To slow up the flow of piddle and reduce the gradient , I bring the stone’s throw . ”
Like most elements in the garden , the bench in this billet has a story . “ Sometime in the 80s , Longwood decided to replace their satisfying oak benches in the fountain bench because they were bear , ” Darke says . “ They made them usable to employees for $ 2 , so I bought one . We get 20 old age out of that bench . When I redid this space , I found a local journeyman who had access to good white oak tree , and commission him to make over the terrace . He used the original square bracket on the back of the Longwood bench . This bench has a chronicle . You ca n’t buy it at Smith & Hawken . ”

Above:“My wife and I have many sitting places , and each is crafted to provide a dissimilar experience , ” Darke order . The prat face north , and behind them is the woodland area with the moss path . “ Placed with hand paws and beechwood behind them , this seating region provides shelter and intimacy . ” Purple splendor Allium ( purple / pinkish blooms ) and sky dreary theadleaf bluestar ( blooms to the right of the alliums ) decorate the border . Christmas fern is in the foreground , behind the seats .
Above:“We call this structure a cabin , but sometimes I joke that it ’s a glorify garden shed , ” says Darke . An Amish carpenter built it by hand out of mostly locally sawn wood . “ The porch is just deep enough for two the great unwashed and perhaps a dog , ” Darke enounce . “ It ’s the perfect spot to sit and listen to the music of the rain falling on the metallic element roof . ”
Darke and Zoehrer constructed the fire circle in front of the cabin with local gemstone . “ A redbud Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree flower in the background . In the foreground to the rightfulness is a 120 - class - sometime Erie Railroad association “ that I de jure acquired , ” Darke say . “ When it gets wet , the W darkens . When it snows , it becomes a white W. ”
Above : This pathway is paved with regional Pennsylvania bluestone . “ We selected these pavers because of their remarkable texture , ” Darke say . “ We have n’t been capable to find more of it since we constructed this footpath . ”
The barque of river birch ( Betula nigra ) add to the stunning texture of the regional Pennsylvania bluestone pathway . “ There are at least 150 different specie of works in this photograph , ” Darke says . Some of the most evident are witch alder and whitewood aster ( right side of pathway ) , and a mixing of Christmas fern andEpimedium(left side of pathway ) .
At the end of the pathway is a wooden trellis that sits off the back of the house . When in season , the deciduous vine on the trellis , which attract hummingbird , leaf out and provide Darke and Zoehrer with subtlety .
Above:“Five years ago we catch this local stone from a quarrier , ” Darke says . “ I chiseled into it to create a piddle germ for birds . ” This birdbath , which barely requires any piss , is about 100 railyard out from Darke ’s home office . “ There ’s just enough flora circumvent it for the birds to have sanctuary . ” A number of fern , silverbells , asters , light bulb , andLobeliaare in this domain . “ This is an example of how with the unproblematic of mechanisms , and low impact on your budget , you could add functionality in a means that provides for wildlife , preserve , and gives you a reference of amusement , ” Darke says .

It express the same smudge in the front garden express in the previous figure of speech . “ We garden primarily for fall , ” Darke says . “ Our neighborhood is full of what seems like infinite hues of colour . I ca n’t suppose not celebrating them while you be here . ”
Above : Darke and Zoehrer created this garden art that they dubbedMeadow Metropololis . “Meadow Metropolisdeliberately conjure a tall New York City skyscraper . The art is made of original vent cincture from Longwood ’s hothouse . “ When I was working at Longwood in the 90s , they were doing a restoration , and they put back these vent-hole sashes ( made of handwriting - sheathed copper over old - outgrowth cedarwood ) with unstained - sword vents . ” Darke and Zoehrer can see this from their bedroom . “ Throughout the day , the light shape that the glass creates change , ” Darke says .
Above:“I took this prototype from a helicopter … with my seatbelt securely fastened , of class . ” Darke suppose .
