The heat and humidity are nearly unbearable right on now in South Carolina . Even in the early mornings , when temperature are in the upper 70s to the low crushed 80s , just irrigate the garden is a rather unpleasant , sweaty task . This strong weather is also taking a toll on the plants in my garden , as the heatwave unfortunately coincides with an ongoing drought . The dry conditions here and elsewhere in the world means that gardener and non - gardener similar demand to be aware of their water usage in the garden and around the house .
Growing up in an one-time farmhouse in the mountains of Virginia , I quickly determine about the grandness of water . Built in the nineties and far from urban usefulness , the farmhouse still relies on the original shallow helping hand - dug well feed in by the local body of water table . summer meant brusque 5 - moment showers and occasional trips to town to take advantage of the launderette to conserve every gallon of water in the well . The vegetable garden and the decorative landscape around the family also needed a share of that precious H2O . Using some simple illusion and tips we were usually able-bodied to keep the important plant alive even during hard drought .

1. Maximize Storm Water
My family charter advantage of periodic summer thunderstorm that passed through the mountains in the late afternoons . Every downspout of the house and outbuildings had a rain gun barrel absolutely placed to trip up the rainfall from the speedy downpours allowing us to easily fill our watering nates for the next few mornings .
2. Use Watering Cans
Speaking of watering tail end , they are some of the most water effective tool for your landscape and garden . lachrymation bum allow you to place a stream of water at the understructure of targeted plants , letting you gazump specific root systems while not wasting water when you move between various plantings , as is plebeian with open - hosepipe watering .
3. Collect Gray Water
We also roll up clean gray water at the farmhouse . While you waited for the urine in the shower to warm up , a bucket was target in the bathing tub to call for the cold H2O . Dish body of water , manipulate water and light gray water from various other sources all avail our plant thrive without using additional well water .
4. Water-Wise Gardening
To facilitate keep water needs for plants down we mulched both edible and cosmetic planting , used aboriginal plants in our landscape , and watered in the early mornings to avail slow dehydration .
While I no longer live in the mass , I still use some of the moral I memorize in my early days relying on lachrymation cans , rain barrel and batch of other techniques to maximise the usage of the valued water resources partake in by us all . No matter if it comes from a seemingly endless supply of city water or a hundred year former shoal well in your backyard , we can all do our part to conserve water .
