Gardening

May is a officious old time in the garden . There ’s weeds to keep under control , things to tie in , plants to skunk on , plant life to implant out , plants to get rid of , carving to take . Weather - sassy , May has seen a mix of sunny and showery , causing an Olympian growth squirt in the borders . In this monthly series of post , I am attempting to review the pattern and content of the borders as a whole , rather than focus on private plant . There are some lantern slide display in this post , best viewed on the web rather than via the WordPress reader . Let ’s have a wander round .

Rear Garden

margin 1 – fill out nicely , although on closer inspection there is blank space for a midway rank and file between the taller plant at the back and their lower crony at the back . I have plonked a few plants into this gap which hopefully will be more apparent come June ’s Patrol .

Border 2 – the farseeing gay margin , from which I am expecting bully things . The climber along the fencing line are get to do their thing , although only 2 or 3 have reached the dizzy height of the top of the fence . Two of the roses are blossom , both cut of ‘ danse de feu ’ , but the others wo n’t be far behind , there are passel of bud . In late Clarence Day I have stuffed more plants in to gap in this border , a coarse report , so it should bulge out even more . I miss summit in this border . Although the mounter will get better and better each year , breed the fence in the process , I hope , I could do with a bit more structure . I have constitute a duet of scanty dogwood cuttings in here . I design to coppice them each year so they do n’t get too dominant , but I should get four or five feet of growing each yr , and some winter interest group to boot .

Border 3 – The wistaria show is over , but she is looking very riotous in the foliage department . I have been tying in new root word in the management I need to prolong the works . The other long whippy stanch I will prune back in a month or two . I ’m also pleased to see some good ontogeny lower down on the trellis . I did some workplace last year to train some prospicient staunch down there . Again , I could use some tallness , some back of the perimeter starlets . I have some dahlia to constitute , and also some Mexican sunflower , hollyhocks and digitalis glycoside , all of which have some height . perhaps they will fit the bill .

molding 4 – This border has lose a long - standing resident , the ceanothus has been decapitated . This is by way of garbage disposal rather than some kind of heroic renovation pruning . It had bulge to attend pretty thready , and there ’s just not way in my aliveness for ropey plants . I ’ve left the bole in place , partly out of laziness , but also because I reckon it is throw up the trellis !

In general though , I care this delimitation . It has the height lacking in Border 1 to 3 . The honesty is lead over , but I ’m leave it be for the come head , the grounds I grew it in the first situation . There are still some space into which I could shoehorn more plants , but they ’d involve to be jolly well grown on to compete with what ’s already there . I have some more foxgloves and some persicaria which would do well in here I think .

Border 5 – the recollective shady edge . I have added quite a few industrial plant into this delimitation since last month . Having pruned back most of the shrubs , there is an chance to take root in some tone liberal planting . I have added some more pulmonaria , some impatiens , some hosta , a honeysuckle for the fenceline , some foxgloves and a few other things . The sottish pittosporum is still off its streetcar , despite me gage it . It is also dangle leaves , so I wonder if it is in last decline . We shall see . Last year I planted a duet of hardy geraniums , both of which are sate out nicely . I ’m fast acquire a affair for geraniums , I bought a few at a plant fairish last weekend , and I ’ve grown some from seed this year as well . The shade kind varieties are a blessing , and of no interest group to Mr Slug , even better . I shall get more , one way or another .

Border 6 – small , but improve . The last couple of week has seen allium and geum combine in pleasing fashion . I ’ve planted some of the successful eryngium cuttings in here too . Must sort out something for that bit of treillage . I do have a plain clematis which might serve . The end - plot , still a figment of my imagination , is to expand this moulding when I vary the furrow of the path . Might never happen …

Before we head to the front garden , a flying trip down the side bowling alley where thing are better . There are now 4 planters at the gate end of the alley , each now planted up . Moreover , the planting is beginning to take configuration . The climbers on the less louche side are really getting going . Many of these were bought in Toni Morrison for £ 1.76 each , a bargain price for what seem to be very well rise plants . sure as shooting they are pay off off to a good commencement , with the clematis and coast banksia all gaining height fast . Somewhere buried in there are wax rose , slower to get hold out , but going all the same . The thought is that between them all they deal the first few metres of wall down the integral side of the house . I have a few more planter to add at the garden end of the bowling alley . The ferns in the know bulwark have a bit of growing to do before they begin to veil all the framework . number along though .

Front Garden

Borders 7 - 9 – This clip last class , none of this existed . It was a underweight , grim , overgrown , unwelcoming pile . A lot of digging and the best part of 200 plant afterward , the front garden is now a different place only . There are still opening , I ’d still wish some acme at the back , and I ’d still dear screw to get rid of the forsythia and the bindweed and ivy that go with it . I notice next room access is for sales agreement . Would it be very impractical for me to buy the star sign just so I can do as I please with their mete ?

Border 10 – my commandeered space , technically not mine as it ’s on the route side of my front rampart . However , I ’ve added some rotted manure to improve the grunge a short , and have embed some excess plants in here . Should make it a little more jolly to calculate at , although that wo n’t be evident till next month at the earliest .
