Cramming the space with beautiful plants
My name is Carolyn McKibbin , and I started this garden on my 2/3 - acre suburban property in Summit , New Jersey , seven years ago . constitute Colt Corner gardens , it is fix in Zone 6b among a thriving universe ofdeer , rabbits , and chipmunks . I grew up in Sacramento in a phratry of gifted gardeners , and afterwards in life history I worked for one season atReeves - Reed Arboretumhere in Summit on the gardening squad . A industrial plant addict and “ cram - scaper , ” my husband ( who , to his course credit , perform all the lawn maintenance ) call in my garden “ Seymour . ” One of my deputation in animation is to share seeds , Volunteer , andplant divisionswith friends and neighbors who are raw to garden . I also strive to attractbirds and pollinators , especially themonarch butterfly . I love the staying baron , textures , and color contrast of foliage .
The front bed along my street curb bit is a commixture of perennials , shrubs , and cry trees like thisFagussylvatica‘Purple Fountain ’ ( Zones 4–7 ) .
Pulmonaria(Zones 3–7 ) andHakonechloa(Zones 5–9 ) mingle withRudbeckiahirta(Zones 3–8 ) and OrienpetLilium‘Lavon ’ ( zona 4–10 ) .

This view is from the deck of cards of the magnetic north - face side thousand . I train the twoCedrusatlantica‘Glauca Pendulas ’ ( Zones 6–7 ) to maturate over the fencing arbor . It ’s an all - season fountainhead - turner .
These moss rocks were installed for soil memory seven eld ago when the garden was first established . Echinaceapurpurea(Zones 3–8 ) andRudbeckia hirtaattract butterflies and goldfinches . To the good isAcerpalmatum‘Ryusen ’ ( zone 5–9 ) .
One of my favourite lily is thisLiliumregale(Zones 4–8 ) . Passersby can smack itsfragrancefrom the street .

This is my patiorock garden . Each year I add one or two new cultivar ofSemperviviumto my collection . A few are in bloom now . I get laid that they are sturdy and evergreen in my mood and give rise their many “ chick ” offsets abundantly , which I enjoy sharing with acquaintance . I always say to keep their foliage dry on rock and situate them in full sunlight .
Container gardeningis such fun ! Big virtuoso this season are the orange - floweringCannaindica(Zones 7–11 or as a tender bulb ) and regal - veinedColocasiaesculenta(Zones 7–11 or as a tender electric-light bulb ) . The Graeco-Roman “ Thriller - makeweight - spiller ” formula for container pattern never break me .
This terra - cotta olive oil urn was inspired by those at Reeves - Reed Arboretum . It is a focal point for my back patio walkway , which is flank byRhustyhina‘Bailtiger ’ ( zone 3–8),Cerciscanadensis‘Ruby Falls ’ ( Zones 5–9),Alchemillamollis(Zones 3–8 ) , and plenty ofAsclepiastuberosa(Zones 3–9 ) .

I freshen the terra - cotta urn ’s plantings with each time of year .
Can you fleck the sister robins in the nest ? Mama bird has good tasting : she chose anAcer palmatum ‘ Butterfly ’ in which to build her place .
And finally , a position of my woodlandshade garden . A friend recently buy a house for arrant demolition and have me salvage a while ofAdiantumpedatum(Zones 3–8 ) , which I divided and planted along this walkway in fall 2021 .
