Enjoy the diversity of this popular tropical vine, no matter where you garden
Maria Medina share these wonderful pic of one of her favorite plants — the bougainvillea !
The genusBougainvilleais native to South America , where there are several specie . These have been hybridized extensively by gardeners to create the many beautiful cultivar that are iconic parts of warm - mood gardens around the world . Bougainvillea are mostly bighearted , scramble vines with humble , ashen flowers . But like other pop plants , such as the poinsettia , the real show is not from the flowers but from the intensely colored , papery bracts that surround the actual blossoms . These bracts are classically a brilliant Battle of Magenta , but as you ’ll see in these images , plant stock breeder have produce a wide stove of dissimilar colour .
Bougainvillea are popular in warm parts of the humankind for their unbelievable peak and for their heartiness , ecumenical health , and drought margin . During dry spells , they can act as a deciduous plant , send packing their leave of absence and waiting for the rains to bring back .

Though bougainvillea are not cold large-minded ( only unfearing to Zone 9 ) , it is possible to farm them in container in cold climate . count for dwarf cultivars that will perform better in a pot , enjoy them outside during the summer , and then convey them indoors when immobilize weather condition threatens . If you keep them dry during that winter time period , they ’ll go inactive and only wait until you begin watering again with warmer atmospheric condition in spring .
The genus is list after Admiral Louis - Antoine de Bougainville , who sail around the world for the French administration in the 1700s . A natural scientist on the voyage , Philibert Commerson , named the plant life after the admiral , but it is now believe that he might not have been the one to actually discover the plant life first in Brazil , because he was inauspicious for much of the trip . Jeanne Baret , who was the first woman to journey around the world , went along on the trip disguised as a gentleman . An expert botanist , she belike did most of the plant geographic expedition that Commerson received credit for .
There is a lot to love about the genusBougainvillea , and whether you’re able to grow it outside or require to put it in a container to move indoors for the winter , there is a place for bougainvilleas in well-nigh every garden !
