End of month View. February. The Winter Garden.
I am a day late , but nevertheless I go for that I am not too recent to connect in with thePatientgardener‘s death of the Month meme . I am focusing on my latest projection and I will revisit it in future EOM posts to see how it progresses . I mentioned some fourth dimension ago that I wanted to make a garden for winter interest because although I grow many works that are beautiful in winter , they do n’t make much shock as they are dotted about the garden .
I choose a neglected street corner of the orchard . And when I say neglected , I am not exaggerating , it was positively shameful . When I dig up the entire front lawn four year ago I could n’t straighten my dead body for mean solar day and I was n’t look forrard to doing it again . I do n’t have a gardener , but on this occasion I decided to get help . ( No , not the Pianist , he keeps tell me that he has to look after his hands . ) But I found Paul and Julie , a really enthusiastic husband and wife team who seem well-chosen to tackle anything . They go under to work digging up greensward and I tackled the horrors of tenner on the other side of what is last to be a grass path . I observe Hedera helix , nettles and elder seedlings amongst brick and debris . There was even an ancient pig sty hide out in the underbrush . There is the dreaded honey fungus in the woodlet which has down many of the apple trees , but this fungus is a different one and rather beautiful . I began to marvel what I was go to encounter next , buried in the trash of centuries . Maybe that is where mytoolshed monsteris hiding , ready to bound out and barrack at me .
plant it up is exciting , but expensive . I have moved quite a few plants here from other parts of the garden . I find most thing move alright , apart from Daphnes . Never move a Daphne , it will cause instant expiry . From other parts of the garden I have moved two Witch Hazels ; orange ‘ Jelena and scarlet ‘ Livia ’ andLonicera elisaewhich is lovely though not highly scented .

Lonicera elisae
Lonicera elisae
Arbutus unedo‘Rubra ’ has plant a new home here and also the lovely redCryptomeria japonica‘Rubra ’ .
I reckon conifers are dandy for all circular interest as long as they are not overdone . I bought the burn yellow miniature pinePinus mugo‘Golden Glow ’ , a dwarfChamaecyparisobtusa‘Fernspray ’ a blue prostrate juniper;Juniperus squamata‘Holger ’ and the gorgeousAbies koreanawhich when it is mature has adorable unsloped cone like candles .

Lonicera elisae
I have intercourse the orangeCornus sanguinea‘Winter Flame ’ so I had to have some of these . apropos you will sometimes discover it name ‘ Winter Beauty ’ but as far as I can make out this is the same affair . I bought some redCornus alba‘Siberica ’ which is so spectacular in Winter , behind this one I am going to plant theOsmanthus heterophyllus‘Goshiki ’ which looks rather like a Charles Hardin Holley .
genus Cornus alba ‘ Siberica ’ and Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘ Goshiki ’
When I was at Anglesey Abbey recently I bought three lovely bright red Cornus which I had never take care before called Baton Rouge ’ . It is a much bright red than the ‘ Westonbirt ’ .

Cornus alba ‘ Baton Rouge ’
A Cornus you do n’t see so often is much finer stemmedCornus sericea‘Kelseyi ’ which make a nice compendious shrub . The leaves turn a lovely red and orangish in winter .
Cornus sericea ‘ Kelseyi ’

I sleep together grasses and I think the blood-red Uncinia rubra is a sodding match for the Cornus .
Uncinia rubra
green goddess are so effective in Winter , so I have bought a few more and I will be adding to them .

I have planted a birch rod Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree which is new to me calledBetula albosinensis‘Pink Champagne . Two more Tree with wonderful barque that I really need arePrunus serrulaandAcer griseum . Although I have planted snowdrops , false hellebore , heucheras , heathers and primroses and a few ferns it is still looking very unembellished . I shall just have to be patient ; at least I have made a outset . I will finish with a persuasion of a different part of the garden which is in need of a moment of attention but never take care , just wait at the lovely Japanese Apricot;Prunus mume‘Beni - chidori ’ it has such gorgeous , deep pink flowers which are lightly scented . I love it . Thank youHelenat the Patient Gardener blog for host the End of Month View meme . Do pop over and see what other people have been showing us in their final stage of calendar month view .

You ’ve made a LOT of progress , Chloris ! ( Do Paul and Julie have any plans to visit Southern California ? 😉 I ’d planned to pass on the remaining lawn in my garden alone until next twelvemonth but it ’s already bugging the heck out of me . ) You ’ve made a lot of great choice for your new bed and I ’m beaming you be after to give us a look at it as it evolves . I hope the toolshed monstrosity keeps his distance as you go about your work elsewhere !
Oh , that toolshed teras is scary ! What amazing progress you ’ve made . I ’m fascinated by all your plants . I ’ve never develop a Daphne , but it ’s unspoilt to know they do n’t like to be moved . It get to you inquire how they survive at all in nature .
Dear Chloris , I was call up about you when I woke up this morning after having take this military post just before going to bed … . you do n’t have a gardener ! You take attention of that huge garden all by yourself ( most of the metre ) . I am so impressed . I finger I make ta get outside and get to work . ( Raining , yay ! ) What an stirring you are ! I cerebrate I will make a cheery summer garden … .. to heck with all the restrictions , government or ego - imposed ! Daphne is so fussy here , you ca n’t even move the pot without it beginning to languish .

It ’s so hard not to overplant when you first start a newfangled bed , but it will shortly look nicely filled in . It count so much good than the neglected niche it was . I hope you incur a fleck for an Acer griseum , I have one and I have it off it .
How exciting to have so much new space to plant ! newfangled plantings always look a footling sparse but you ’ve chosen so many beautiful plants and they ’ll fill the space in no time at all . Your Prunus mume is gorgeous . Your new header image is sensational . Is that Tropaeolum tricolor ? Such a adorable thing !
Oh what an exciting starting time Chloris ! No doubt you must want it to grow and as if by magic knit together instantly – I know I would . I ’m looking forth to future bulletins .

We have loads of garden / sod digging ahead of us . I could use a team of helpers too . But oh the panting of new garden beds . Now if we could lose all this snow….it will still be many hebdomad of look here .
