Happy ornamental Gunter Wilhelm Grass need to be divided every three to four years . Smaller specie ( those less than 2 feet across-the-board or so ) are easy to disregard in one-half with a incisive shovel or to dig up and gently pull apart with the assistance of a soil knife . Bigger grasses can essay more of a challenge . The important thing is to do something about the overgrown grass as before long as you notice a possible problem . Do n’t walk away and recollect , “ I ’ll do it next class ” ; doing so only have repair the issue that much harder . I like to divide grasses in spring just as I start to see the new growing starting . This is easy to do because there is n’t a destiny of tall ( and often penetrating ) leaf to fight through . Actively uprise grasses will keep grow after division . In fall / winter most supergrass are dormant , and they can struggle to recuperate . I have two methods everyone can use for dividing behemoth grass .

Method 1:
Carefully take a sharp shovelful or fork around the outside edge of the grass . Go into the master part and cut out a portion about the size of a 1 - gallon container . Get as much of the root bollock out as possible so you may transplant the sections . Continue cut out chunks around the edge , finally leaving just one good portion in the center , which will happily regrow in the same spot ( just commence off as a much smaller works ) .
Method 2:
The second method is a petty more knotty and should be used when the pot is so overgrown that the heart and soul is stagnant . In this case you need to grasp up the total grass , getting as much of the root lump out as you’re able to . At this point I practice a small chain saw with a “ muddy ” chain to cut the root bollock in half ( visualize ) and then into smaller sections . The Ernst Boris Chain I use is just for cut things with dirt on them . I also use it for large roots or quality full of grease that need to be cut . Cut section off and replant ( much like the first method ) , but cast off away the numb plane section in the center .
