What You’ll Learn

I bet those light bulb are just waiting to number out of the earth , so let ’s dig in .

Harvesting Garlic for Future Planting

The first step to storing semen garlic is , of course , get your hands on all those bulbs .

To harvest them , await until they ripen and delve down with a garden fork or tongue .

lightly leverage the electric-light bulb up and out of the ground . If this is your first time harvest and you do n’t know what to await for , visit our guide to harvesting Allium sativum for tips .

When you ’re ready , fascinate the viridity as close to the base as potential and pluck gently as you do this , while at the same time countermand with the fork or trowel from below .

Be extra deliberate not to puncture or contuse the electric-light bulb . If you do happen to damage any , set those aside to be used in cooking right away .

If you ’re growingsoftneck types , you ’ll need to be extra heedful . The neck are n’t as stalwart as hardneck type , and if you pull too heavily , you ’ll separate the electric light from the jet .

Eat any that become separated right away and only stash away those that came out with the greens attach .

Gently sweep away any light grunge on the heads , but do n’t interest if there ’s some odd . It will dry out off and come away easily after the bulbs have cured .

Curing

Do n’t even essay to store the light bulb before you cure them for at least three weeks , or rather twice that .

To heal , lie the garlic out after you harvest it for just a few twenty-four hours in a cool region with full air circulation .

you’re able to also hang them instantly , but I care to get them sit down out for just a few days first so the putting surface can dry and shrink a bit before I braid them .

Trim off the roots near the base .

Take bundles of four to 10 works and secure the leave together . Braiding is an gentle option , but you could also batten natural rubber bands , twine , or forget me drug around the bundles .

pay heed them in a cool , dry expanse out of verbatim sun . allow them attend there for up to six weeks until the skin is ironical and wrinkled .

Once they ’ve heal , cut off any base you miss and remove the leafy tops . Brush off any remaining dirt .

Storage Conditions

Temperature toy a huge factor in how long your seed ail will last in computer memory . Bulbs put in in a teetotal , unheated way that is about 47 to 65 ° farad will usually last long enough to be planted .

Anything below 47 ° F will shorten its lifespan , and freezing will kill it .

I bonk that may seem counterintuitive since a garlic electric-light bulb growing in the ground can pull round a frost , but that ’s because it ’s emerged from dormancy and actively uprise , and insulated by the grease .

Anything above 65 ° F and you ’ll get premature germination .

Do n’t place your ejaculate garlic anywhere ardent , like on top of a refrigerator , near a heating system vent , next to a window , or in a hot kitchen . Do n’t refrigerate the bulb , as this make germinate as well .

If you ’re curious , storage changes the proportion of isoalliin and cycloalliin , which subtly alter the tang .

Cooler consideration have a more positive outcome on the change in the clove over warm conditions in that there are fewer modification in the level of cycloalliin and an increase in isoalliin .

That ’s why fresh cloves run to be much gamy than those that have been cure and stack away for a while .

While you probably are n’t eating your clove tree , unless you do as I do and adopt a “ one for me , one for the ground ” growing insurance policy , it ’s interesting to know .

Avoid areas with relative humidness over 50 percentage .

Only store the highest quality bulbs . If you spot anysigns of diseaseor impairment , do n’t keep that ail for plant .

Storage Container Options

Brown paper is the unadulterated entrepot material . If you have brown paper bags available , use those . you may also use stumbler paper or composition board .

Place a few cured bulbs in each bag or order the bulbs in cardboard box just a few layer deep .

you may place thick composition or cardboard between the layers , but that ’s not necessary . Baskets work too , if you ’re fancy .

gentle wind circulation is the most lively part of storage after temperature , so if you have the room , spot only as many light bulb together as you could while still give a flake of air space between them .

Avoid charge card or anything that is air-tight .

How Long to Store Seed Garlic

Most electric-light bulb will last about six months in storage . There are some kind that can even last for nine month to a year in the correct conditions .

Some of the proficient storers admit ‘ Chesnok Red , ’ Creole type , ‘ Georgian Crystal , ’ ‘ Porcelain , ’ ‘ Romanian Red , ’ silverskin types , and ‘ Thermadrone . ’ All of these will last up to a year .

But really , almost any case of cured garlic , particularly hardnecks likeGerman Whiteor ‘ Persian Star , ’ will last up to six month .

adopt you harvested in the summer and are planting in late fall , that should be peck of time .

Note that bulbs purchased from the grocery store storehouse has been cure , but it is typically heat treated and unsuitable for found in the garden .

When you ’re quick to constitute your germ origin , remove the bulbs from your bags or box .

mildly peel off the outer newspaper to split the clove inside each bulb , leaving their individual wrappings integral . You ’re ready to get to sowing !
