Most hypericum bush will need only a short tidying prune after anthesis or a light shear over for improved shaping and regular growing , as Master Horticulturist Peter Lickorish explains :

“ Hypericum is one of those plants which exemplifies that pruning is a man - made artwork and as such there is no particular right or wrong approaching .
“ The bulk flower on fresh woodwind instrument , which means as long as you avoid pruning in the 2 - 3 month before blossoming , you could cut back to accomplish what you require from the plant . ”
Some more vigorous cultivator , such asHypericum‘Hidcote ’ , can be pruned back harder and sure-enough shrub that need greening can be cut down back firmly , secretive to ground level , in spring .

Maintenance Pruning
Most hypericum bush will only involve to be tidied up and given a light prune just after they have complete flowering .
bushed , damaged or diseased cloth should be removed , and you’re able to cut back a little to keep the shrubs in shape and looking in force .
“ Some have a habit of producing left over long , straggly stems , which can be clipped back to retain the overall shape , ” share Master Horticulturist Peter Lickorish .
you may also keep the shrubs looking unspoiled by remove up to around one - third of the aged wood , though this is not essential .
After pruning , you should mulch the plants , and look at feeding them with a gamey - potassium constituent fertiliser .
Pruning For Shape
sure Hypericum are spring up as hedge or ground cover and require shape to produce the desired effect .
If you are grow your hypericums in this way of life , it is often a good musical theme to shear over the plants and prune them a little more deeply to see that the proper effect is defend .
Pruning Vigorous Varieties
Some hypericums are more vigorous growers and require a harder prune , whether or not you wish to keep them a special size and condition .
Cutting these varieties back hard in springwill further good new outgrowth as well as keep them attractive and contained .
“ I do tend to cut down my Hypericums fairly hard back in late wintertime or other spring , creating a framework of woody branches around 30 cm gamey , from which a profusion of luxuriant ontogeny form , ” says Peter .
“ For dry land - covering species , I find cutting stems nearest the edge of the border to ground level , or lift them , allows those somewhat further in to arch over and soften the edge .
“ go along this up regularly is a good fashion to stop it spilling over path , whilst looking somewhat raw . ”
Pruning To Rejuvenate
If you have an older hypericum bush that needs rejuvenation , then do n’t be afraid to do something quite drastic .
Prune the shrub by burn it back hard , to just 30 centimeter or so above soil degree in the saltation .
This should encourage it to put on healthy fresh growth .
Though they do not involve it often , hypericums in general are patient of of pruning , and can be firmly snip in spring should they get out of paw .
