When I went to visit Bob and Christa Stamper ’s garden in Zionsville , Pennsylvania , a few weeks ago , Bob point out this tree diagram , and I was horrified … Holy cow ! He says , “ This is the common native honeylocust ( Gleditsia triacanthos , USDA Hardiness Zones 3 - 7 ) . A tenacious clock time ago I regulate 10 plants of a spineless sort to create a minuscule , airy grove , but this one has reverted . The conspicuous thorn on the trunk are change branches . plainly this is an adjustment against great herbivores in the geological past . I like the thorns for their prehistoric appearing , but one day Christa , my wife , was weed on the side by the tree and lost her balance . She get through out to the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree for support and painfully prod herself . Needless to say , she has no enceinte sexual love for this tree diagram . Since then she makes certain she has good footing when put to work near it and has trim off the crushed thorns . Pioneers used the very laborious thorns as nail , for card wool , and as pins for closing sacks . ” Fascinating ! But I wo n’t be rushing out to corrupt one , even though the lacy veil it creates when you look up to the sky is beautiful !
