When it comes to our 2020 garden plan at the farm , it ’s all about growing to fill up up our larder , deep-freeze and more !
As you will see in the design below , that mean filling our lift dustup with as many vegetables as possible . And it also mean taking sequence planting to a new level as well .
All in rescript to fill up a pantry and freezer that were not thought to be want this class .
The last few week have been a act surreal for us . Maybe unreal is a better term .
For those that do n’t recognize , we were to be on the route this entire growing season finish up our 50 DoS one year tour . Obviously , with recent the events that have transpired , that plan has changed drastically .
unluckily , know we would be give out for a year , we spent last yr using up much of our larder and freezer . Talk about a time to total home to unsheathed cupboards !
But hey , liveliness is about making the unspoilt of every position . And since we love to garden and need to restock our larder , it was time to commute appurtenance and turn a negative into a plus .
After all , growing , canning and freezing is what we love to do ! So with no time to waste , the tarp over the garden amount off , the seed - starting outdoor stage came to living , and the 2020 Garden Plan was hatch – and here it is !
Below is our 2020 Old World Garden Plan . We have included some high spot of the varieties and planting styles below as well .
This will be a big year for the salad crops . For one , they can be institute early on . In fact , we already have most of them in . They also mature tight , so hopefully , will be harvesting our first Spinacia oleracea , lettuce , radish and more within 4 to 5 hebdomad .
From there , the plan is to taking over plant repeatedly . That style , no matter what , we have fresh greens all natural spring , summertime and evenfall .
We are also implant a bonny amount of turnips this year . Last year , we get down using them as a substitute for potatoes in soup and joint – and dead loved them ! The same goes for oversized radishes as well – they are complete for poke fun .
Notable Plants : Black Seeded Simpson , Paris Island Romaine , Cherry Belle , Watermelon Radishes , Turnips , White , Red & Yellow Onion set , Kale , Spinach , Sugar Snap Peas .
Tomatoes are not only are a front-runner , but a key vegetable to spring up to fill the pantry and freezer . Beyond fresh eating , we are increasing our Lycopersicon esculentum planting to make and continue salsa , picante , pasta sauce , diced tomatoes , firing roasted tomatoes and tomato succus .
Tomatoes are a big part of our soup making as well . We will be making quite a few batches of homemade chilli vegetable , and vegetable - kick soup over the fire this summer and fall to stock up the deep freezer with soup bricks !
Because of that , we have about doubled our San Marzano tomato plant life for the 2020 Garden Plan . They are the perfect tomato for canning and making tomato salsa , soups and sauce . And , they are heavy producers in the garden .
We also added in four tomatillo plants to our grow strategy this twelvemonth . Although not a true tomato plant , they are a fellow nightshade family member .
We decrease in passion with salsa verde on our trip , and it has now become a “ must - make ” for both fresh eating , and canning a year ’s provision .
Plants : San Marzano , Hillbilly , Tiger Blush , Purple Cherokee , Mr. Stripey . Green Tomatilo , Black Krim , Brandywine , tomatillo .

We will be freezing and terminate a large supplying of green and purple noodle this yr . To attain this destination , we will succession plant with several separate crops over the grade of the year .

We are planting zucchini and cucumbers everywhere in our 2020 Garden Plan . In our straw bale crates , in our raised rows , and even among our popcorn rows .
Corn , zuchinni and cucumbers are a dandy craw to intermingle . The corn provides support for the climb cucumbers vine . And at the same time , the prickly Cucumis sativus and zucchini vines help keep raccoon and other pest aside from the corn .

We love capsicum pepper plant for so many unlike reasons – fresh feeding , stuff peppers , salsa – and for throw delicious appetizers from our shishito and jalapeno peppers .
But in addition to all of those , we also make and preserve a whole mess of things from our pepper harvest . And that is why they are prevalent in our 2020 Garden Plan .
From englut pepper soup and stuffed common pepper , to candied jalapenos , banana pepper rings and hot capsicum pepper plant leaf mustard . And who can forget about delightful hot pepper flakes and pulverization !
Plants : Italian Roaster , Jalapeno , Red Chili , Italian Roaster , Chinese Five Color , Serrano , Sweet Orange , Red and Yellow Bell , Green Bell , Shishito
We now grow all of our Solanum tuberosum in our homemade Irish potato crates . And that includes angelical white potato , and traditional potatoes as well . It is quite simply the well-off way to develop and harvest murphy . See : arise Potatoes In Crates
And do we ever need to develop them this year ! We are totally out and it is time to stockpile up !

There of course are many more crops as well that will come to life . Luckily , we did constitute our ail last fall and will have that to harvest in early July . One thing is for sure – we are back , and we are in GARDEN MODE . And yes , of form there are grinning on our typeface – how can you not when you are garden !
We are all stock up on ourworm castings(thankfully could buy on melodic line this class ! ) , our rain piss tank are in place – and here we go !
