The first time I ever encounter the passionflower industrial plant , I was on an island in the Galapagos pursue a mathematical group of brightly colored birds through the forest . We came out of the trees to the brim of a with child swallow hole , and there in the unresolved sunshine , our guide plucked a small xanthous - light-green fruit from a vine . I wish I had use up a photo so that I could show others that mo of revelation . Our guide split the oblong , thenar - sized yield in half and inside was a thick mucose in which two rows of dark seeds were nest . If it does n’t vocalise appetizing , you are n’t alone . I had already volunteer , and no one in my party step up to fight me for the honour .
I dip my finger’s breadth into the fruit ’s gooey center and experimentally placed it on my tongue . Suddenly , the light through the tree line seemed more intense , euphony went off in my forefront and a party localise up workshop in my mouth . My chemical reaction sent everyone into the skirt bushes to find their own passionflower vine yield .

I have searched for that flavor experience ever since — passionflower - flavored intersection in the grocery storage can not match it . I ’m not even trusted that I can double it by rise my own , but I am willing to examine . The aboriginal passionflowers in Ohio arePassiflora luteaandPassiflora incarnata , the latter of which is the variety most often used in herbal supplements . The vine grow in the southerly part of our state along the Ohio river and prefer the lately commove grease of fields and ditches . Although it ’s typically thought of as a aboriginal plant it grows from Illinois to the East Coast , southward to Texas and Florida . In temperate clime , the flora dies back to its roots and broadcast up new green again the following year .
All passionflowers , aka maypops , boast not just the delightful fruit but an otherwordly flower . In some section of the body politic , it ’s difficult to get a fruit to full ripen , as the days are n’t long enough . I have seen the yield form , but they did n’t become the sorcerous delight that I had in the Galapagos . Perhaps it ’s possible if you live in a more southern climate or have a nursery . However , if you do n’t grow passionflower for the yield , the plant still offers much for our eyes and our torso . The flower is the stuff of legend . It is believe that the cross in the center of the flower represents the Passion of Christ , each part of the flower taking on a dissimilar part of the symbolism from shaft to hammers .

I am working on a passionflower vine treillage just off my favorite outside sitting area . The flower are arresting and I relish the remembering while I wait for my first yield .
