With a sunny forecast on the horizon at last , I had Brobdingnagian plan to conquer the garden this preceding weekend and fete my conquest with a skillful , long cycle drive . Tragically , those plans were scare away when I sprained my back while hauling our urine - log poultry pasture pen across rough primer in homework for moving our turkey poults outside during the 24-hour interval . ( We ’ll keep them inside at Nox awhile longer yet ) .

Have I mentioned thatturkeys can be a pain in the neck ?

Anyway , while my troublesome poults excitedly explore their grassy , weedy , buggy new worldly concern , I morosely attempt to guess of something constructive to do . Something that would take my intellect off both my hurting back and the even more excruciating knowledge that I was sentence to sit out the first whole rainless weekend we ’ve had in what feels like forever .   Something loosen up , because tension and muscle tensity just make the pain worse .

Something like rug hooking .

Rug hooking

The wonderfully creative art of Nantucket carpeting hooking involves draw loop of wool recital ( rather than the cloth flight strip used in traditional rug - hooking ) through a backing textile like burlap or linen paper to create beautiful heirloom carpeting , wall hangings , stuff creature and more . The only supply needed are a rug sweetener , backing cloth , yarn of various color ( rather a bulky wool ) , scissors hold , and a few stitchery supplies .   you’re able to make your own design , glean patterns from the world around you , or describe them from books about art , chronicle , fabric or nature . ( However , if you sell your work , be conservative of encroach on the copyright of others ) .

I became drug-addicted on carpet hooking some long time ago , thanks to my friend and fellow shepherd Judy Taylor , a gifted fiber artist who turned her cacoethes for rug - hooking into a thriving business called Little House Rugs . Check outher amazing work and rug hook kits . Although I ’m mortified to admit I have n’t completed an actual rug yet , I ’ve knock off a number of bulwark hangings , pillows , several hobby horses , and a cool Celtic mile vest ( one of Judy ’s designs ) . Right now , I ’m working ( slowly ) on a wall hang of a chestnut blusher horse against a leave - me - not sky . Sitting on our front porch in the cheer , the mankind alive with buzz bumblebees , speed hummingbirds , and the chickadee ’ pinched song , I unlax into the repetitive motions and expanding blue - recital sky . And the pain , as if by magic , eases .
