Looking back on warmer times
Carolyn Hirning , in central Ohio , sent in these photos to remind us all of warmer , more flowery times in the garden .
This photo shows where the tulip tree ( Liriodendrontulipifera , Zones 4–9 ) have its name ! The prominent flowers are improbably beautiful but rarely image . This aboriginal tree is coarse over most of easterly North America , but because it grows 60 to 90 foot grandiloquent , and typically produces flower on the upper branches , getting a probability to see these flowers up close is a rare kickshaw .
A bumblebee come in to sip some ambrosia from a bee balm ( Monardadidyma , Zones 4–9 ) .

imperial coneflower ( Echinaceapurpurea , Zones 3–8 ) blooming around a birdbath . Coneflowersin flower are favorites of manypollinators , and once the blooms have fade , the seeds are a pet snack of birds . They are plants that work for everyone — human and otherwise — in the garden .
Just because a plant life sometimes gets labeled a “ mourning band ” does n’t mean the peak are n’t beautiful ! This crimson clover ( Trifoliumpratense , Zones 3–8 ) has pretty flowers , and it fixes nitrogen from the aviation , help to add up fertility to the soil and the lawn pasture around it to prosper .
pitch-dark - eyed Susan ( Rudbeckiahirta , Zones 3–7 ) has to have some of the cheery blossom in the macrocosm . This species tend to be short - live , often do more like an annual than a recurrent , and it blooms like one too .

A Brobdingnagian sunflower ( Helianthusannuus , annual ) in bloom . As common , I stag at least two pollinators visiting the heyday ! helianthus are favorites of a wide range ofbeneficial insects , and of course they change state into enormous bird feeders once the seeds develop .
The fruit ofbirdhouse gourds(Lagernariasiceraria , annual ) are utilitarian for making into all sort of guile and tools , or just delight as they are .
Monarch butterfly caterpillars chowing down on some milkweed ( Asclepias ) .

This tie-up of tree in fall seems like forever ago while we ’re busy impatiently waiting for spring !
