Spring Garden Update.

I have been a little absent from the blogging existence because I have been trying to adjust to a small garden with little to wind up me through the winter months . It is coming on and I have created a wintertime garden but my old garden had so much to offer every day of the year and there was always a mass of thing to write about .

But today spring is here and the two magnolias in the back garden are look fabulous . I would n’t chooseMagnolia soulangeanabecause it is seen in every suburban garden and as it blossom so early on it often gets burnt brownish by freeze . But so far this year it is face fabulous and as it is so tremendous it makes quite an shock .

There is also a good sizedMagnolia stellatawhich is quite a pleasing pattern .

But it is the winter garden which has given me the most pleasure although it is very small , only 8.5 meter by 5.5 metres . It was produce from the crushed rock drive which was far crowing than we need . I had to fight for every column inch of it though , as the Pianist seemed to think we needed space to park several cars and the unmatched pantechnicon . I have create a garden for wintertime interest in every garden I have had , but I have never had one I could see from the menage and it is a real delicacy to be able to sit in the conservatory and look out at it .

The creating of it last year was very challenging as under the gravel was more compacted gravel and under that was make rubble and under that was more establish junk so we had to lease a man with a mini shovel and then two skips as one was n’t enough . The resulting money fossa had to be fill up with doubly as much top land as I had anticipated . I had backbone put down under the soil as the garden is crushed than the route and I was worried about soggy ground .

This is what it count like last May . The wistaria on the bound is a incentive . The hedging you may see is horror of horrors , Cupressocyparis leylandii . I had it ignore right back and as it seldom come back from bare branches I have planted fiveClematis montanaall the path along . It should look jolly once they get going .

Of course I have crammed in far more shrubs and Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree than the small space can get by with . I had to have my very favourite winter - flowering tree diagram , the Japanese apricotPrunus mume ‘ Beni - chi - dori ’ .

There is now a multi - stemmedPrunus serrula , anAcer griseumandBetula‘Pink Champagne ’ for lovely bark . For gorgeous stem I haveAcer palmatum‘Sango Kaku’,Cornus alba ‘ Baton Rouge ’ andCornus sanguinea‘Anny ’s Winter Orange ’ . And for sick waviness there is a distort hazelnut tree and the twisted copper wire- lookingMuehlenbeckia astonii .

For scent , I haveEdgeworthia chrysantha , although it is not highly sweet-scented , I love the flowers .

Skimmias and sarcococcas are a must and I seemed to need three witch hazels , ( I have a go at it , it ’s rage . ) I planted variegatedAzara micorphyllafor a delicious whiff of vanilla extract in March . Of of course I absolutely require the divineDaphne bholua‘Jacqueline Postill ’ .

For interesting foliage , there are various small conifers , Abies koreanawhich I fuck , Picea glaucavar . Albertiana‘Lilliput ’ andThuya plicata‘Whipcord ’ , For all - year round colour there is aNandina domestica ‘ Bright Lights ’ , pittospermum and a new bright ruby leavedPhotiniafraseri‘Red Light ’ .

At a low-down level I have heuchera , tiarella , ferns , sess and bergenia such as ‘ Bressingham Ruby ’ with big leaves which work red in wintertime . I know I have crammed far too much in and in a few years I shall have to give some of the bush and Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree but I need instant impact . I am start out older , I have implant too many gardens and then act aside just as they are maturing .

Little snowflake , Leucojum vernumlook just like bell - mould snowdrops with glossy leaves . I have the immature tipped ones andLeucojum carpathicumwith yellow gratuity andLeucojum vernumvar . wagneri with twin heads on each stalk . A friend tell me to plant crocus with holly leaves and so I plant out pots I had in the nursery and it work . squirrel do n’t care getting their paws pricked . I grew the prettyCrocus sieberi tricolor , lovely chicken ‘ love story ’ and ‘ Dorothy ’ , and lilac ‘ Vanguard ’ . I like the dainty little species Crocus rather than the big fat Dutch ones .

.

I grow plenty of little Iris , I call up my favourite isIris reticulata‘Katherine ’s Gold ’ although I love the shades of downhearted too .

I miss my carpets of hellebore but I love the many doubles you could get nowadays , ‘ Penny ’s Pink ’ is lovely and all the Frostkiss range with young woman names such as ‘ Anna ’s Red ’ , ‘ Cheryl ’s Shine ’ and ‘ Molly ’s White ’ . The IceN’roses reach is adorable too . I have just got ‘ Carlotta ’ so far .

Some people say the only place for heather is on the moors but I disagree , Erica carneais not the moor heather , it is a beautiful plant life which gives gloss in the depth of wintertime and bees love it .

Now that spring is here I have luck of primroses in every colour , I love the hose in hose , double and the Au and silver grey tied ones .

And now is the time for fritillaries , ipheions , wood anemones , violets , corydalis , Pulsatilla , Epimedium , pulmonaria , Erythronium and wake-robin and all the little spring jewel .

Even with my small garden I have room for many more of these slight treasures . I am not keen on broad sweeps of color , I much favour to create a tapestry of sake where there are always novel thing to front at . It ’s just as well as I no longer have room for broad strokes .
