It ’s that clip of year that we need to corrode warm up comfort intellectual nourishment . I endeavor to employ vegetable , fruits and nuts that are in season . This formula features two of my deary – fresh murphy and apples – in a simple yet scrumptious sweetheart . It is well prepared in a crockpot , although it can be made in a Dutch oven or cover casserole in the oven .

I put this in the crockpot the other day and go out to stack wood . Everytime I came in the sign , I was welcomed by the enticing scent of fresh potaotes , apples and cinnamon bark . It ’s lovely to be capable to have supper ( well at least part of it ) cooking while you make for – and it is quick when you are done !

I first feed a dish standardised to this – my friend and comrade nurseryman , Kathleen Connole , brought it to a potluck . Her version used brown sugar ; by using orchard apple tree cyder , I am able to employ less sweetener and the maple syrup adds a pleasing flavour .

I used a crockpot to make this and they all deviate enormously in temperatures and cooking prison term , so you will have to see it every now and then – the same go if you are cooking it in the oven in a cover mickle or casserole . I ’d say it was in the crockpot on high for and hour or so , and then on humiliated for another hour . Also , note that when you turn the crockpot off or take the Dutch oven from the oven , the contents keep on cooking . So be certain not to overcook the potatoes and apples or they will be mushy .

My family line savour this recipe so much they suggested that I make it for Thanksgiving . I am considering adding a whole red onion , halved and sliced into rings – not sure if I will or not – although I know it would be tasty . It is perfect just as it is , however bring onion would give it a more zesty dimension .

Sweet Potatoes and Apples with Toasted Pecans

Lucky for me , my baby Doneth make for me ‘ Red Jewel ’ sweet potatoes up from South Carolina , since she know I enjoy perfumed patooties . They inspired me to make this mantrap . While ‘ Granny Smith ’ would add tartness to this formula and sour well , they are not my preferred apple . I wish ‘ Honey Crisp ’ , ‘ Nittany ’ , ‘ Pink Lady ’ , and ‘ Gala ’ for grain and flavor ; I do not like a mushy apple , especially eat out of hand .

I tested this recipe with ‘ Honey Crisp ’ , which were sort of small in sizing . Although I used more apples ( due to the size ) than unfermented white potato vine – the mind is to use roughly equal amounts of sweets to apples . Walnuts or sliver almonds would make for , although pecans are spot - on here .

As aformentioned , depending on ingredients , crockpot and oven temps this dishful can cook in as piddling as 1 1/2 hour and it could take up to 3 hour , so set about see for doneness about 1 1/2 hours into cooking time .

Serves 6 to 8

3 - to 4 - column inch cinnamon stick , broken in two piece

Generous loving cup of pecans , toasted

Slice the sweet Irish potato crosswise into about 1/4 - inch slices . Peel the apples if desired , quarter and core them . Slice each twenty-five percent into thirds – the apple slices should be a turn thicker than the sweet potato because they will cook quicker .

add together the inclined veg and yield to crockpot , Dutch oven or casserole . stream the apple cyder overall and drizzle in the maple syrup . Cut the butter into large bits and scatter over everything with just a few pinches common salt and toss in cinnamon stick . Give ingredients a stir .

Put the crockpot on high or put the Dutch oven or casserole in a preheated oven at about 350 degree F. Let Captain James Cook shroud , for about an hour . Carefully remove lid , give contents a stir , and stick with a fork or tongue tip to discipline for doneness . boil down crockpot to moo and oven to about 300 degree F and cover and cook for about another hour . Check for doneness after about 1/2 an hr if you are nearby . Turn the crockpot off or take away from oven while white potato and orchard apple tree still keep their slices ; you do n’t want them to disintegrate and get bathetic ( although it wo n’t ruin flavor – it just wo n’t look as dainty – and grain will be mushy ) .

They can be made ahead and gently reheat . When ready to serve scattering toasted pecans over the top . Serve live .
