Why are there pottery sherd in terra preta ?
When I did my video on my attempt to recreateterra preta , many people wondered what role pottery shards played in the original mix .
Here ’s my video on our attempt to make terra preta :

“ Why add broken clayware ? ” I was asked .
Perhaps the clayware sherd were incidental , and not part of a plan to improve soil . Heck , possibly terra preta itself was a all over accident of primitive permissive waste rubbish dump .
Or maybe not . We do n’t know anything for certain about how terra preta was produce . We just have a go at it that it stay rich and fertile centuries and that it contain bones , clayware shards and charcoal gray .

I added all three to my mix . Without an reason of “ why , ” sometimes you just have to “ do ” and see what happen .
This morning I receive an e-mail from Jordan that look to occupy in one objet d’art of the puzzle : the omnipresent pottery shards found in terra preta soils . They do have a use !
The Effect of Pottery Shards in Terra Preta
Jordan writes :
I ’ve been making biochar for a while now , and studying terra preta extravagantly . Pottery shards are a key facet often overlooked , but they are operose to descend by in copiousness .
He attach this telecasting , show how the use of pottery shard effects terra preta :

Jordan continues :
We ’ve been digging a retentivity pool to line fish , and I now have heap of soil . I ’ve made pottery the Great Compromiser a few times now . I roll it into long thin flight strip and put it inside my bio char retort , and commonly by the time I have char , the clay has been fired , and being rolled long and lean it ’s cracked and shatter down to a good soil aggregate size , ready to utilize .
In the video Jordan sent , a group of people make remains cake for their grime with low - technical school methods , in all likelihood not dissimilar from how the Amazonians created their pottery .

Making Pottery for Terra Preta
At the beginning of the video , the wicking of weewee up a cadaver brick is shown , lead to the germination of a seed which then keep to develop healthily despite its very tiny amount of soil .
From there , it progresses into the making of low - fired the Great Compromiser patty to apply in terra preta filth .
The Process
First , two women take dry clay and smash it down into powder , remove stones as they go :
Then water is added to the teetotal clay mix and kneaded by hired hand .
After the clay is at the right consistency , small handfuls of it are press into clay patties and determine aside to dry .

After dry , these patties are set into a funeral pyre of dry wood , which is then lit .
When the fire burn out , the resulting fire clay patties are remove to be used as a soil amendment in create terra preta .
At the end of the video , the wicking king of a great deal of fired clay patties is point :

So why are there clayware fragment in terra preta ? The most obvious answer is for their wicking effect . The shards almost act as as sub - soil irrigation , moving water through the root zone of plants and making it easier to access .
I have a layer out in the garden that want some work to bear practiced crops . The garlic I planted in it last fall did ill , so I ’m go to re - do the bed with piles of amendments to improve it for this come fall . It ’s obvious now that I need more remains . I ’ll get the tiddler construct patties , plus I ’ve got some bisque - raise clayware shards from a local pottery studio I can add . Heck , maybe I ’ll even throw a few bricks in it . There are old brick scattered all over the yard .
bide tuned . We ’ve got experimenting to do .
