There ’s a hoarded wealth in my little town that not enough people know about : TheJohn J. McCarthy Observatoryon the grounds ofNew Milford High School . It ’s an amazing adeptness , and every second Saturday we seek to make it to their unresolved house , where crowds of kids get a chance to peer into space through the massive scope . A few months ago I noticed they have a great garden , too , and as I ’ve receive to know and spill the beans to one of the founders , Bob Lambert , I love it even more . So here it is on the GPOD !
Bob says,“The McCarthy Observatory is an all - Tennessean lookout building complex dedicated to exciting pupil in the western Connecticut region to science . In celebration of the 400th anniversary of Galileo ’s unbelievable discoveries in astronomy with a scope he made in 1609 , the volunteers began building in 2001 of a 3,000 square foot didactics garden named “ Galileo ’s Garden ” .
“ The design conception was for it to be an activity space for student visiting groups , as well as being a place of repose for the community . There are now seven Master Gardener intern and two Master Gardeners corroborate the culmination of this wonderful blank space .

“ Donated granite tooling for telescope mirror qualification and examination was used as the base for the hardscape , and perennial plant surround the whole the space , walling it off to be a “ flowered classroom ” .
“ scholar sunflower beds and a expectant stainless sword sundial designed by the Tennessean are focal point of the garden , along with a six - understructure sun that is the start of a six - mile “ true - exfoliation ” solar system manikin that cut across the whole town of New Milford . The next phase angle will be to plant Renaissance medicative plant in a part of the garden , consistent with the garden where Galileo instruct in Padua , Italy . ”
So , so nerveless . Hey cwheat000 , you need to go ! Wonderful , Bob , I ca n’t await until my next sojourn !
