Propagation

I started this trial to examine out some advice I ’d read on a seeded player sowing method acting that make up it easy to superintend tearing . you could read more about ithere , but as a reminder , I had three salmagundi in this visitation .

Firstly , digitalis parviflora :   the group sown in vermiculite burgeon forth quickly and in serious numbers compared to those sown on compost .

Something then ate nearly all those seedlings , a slug   I consider ,   I only salvaged a handful to prick out from the vermiculite group .    I kept the Mary Jane though , and every now and again   I still get a seedling which gets add to the tally .   The compost chemical group did n’t do anything much for ages but has produce a boring and steady flow of 1 or 2 seedlings a workweek .   On the plus side they avoid the attentions of the dreaded mollusc .   At time of written material I have a sum of about 20 seedling pricked out from both groups combined .   I ’d gauge that the counting from each group is about even , so on that footing I could call it a lot , but I think that the vermiculite group deserves to be called the success on the basis that many more seedlings germinated , and much more apace , before the slug struck .

The second miscellanea is catchfly arkwrightii .   The lychnis germinated faster in the vermiculite , but not by much , and I reckon they were about even in numbers .   In hindsight , for a slightly more scientific result , it would have better if I had reckon the seeds sow and germination numbers .   I ’ll declare the trial a haulage for this multifariousness .   The ensue flora are doing amercement , and in fact I ’ve cycled them into Trial 04 which you’re able to read abouthere .

Lastly , genus Aconitum .   I was going to write these off in terms of the trial as there has been no sign of any activity in either group despite some electric refrigerator time . However , when I did a final halt this morning I saw a nongregarious seedling in the vermiculite hatful .

clear winner

I require that more will now seem , so all is not lose .   On the foundation that the first one to seem was from the vermiculite slew , I ’m going to declare that a narrow-minded triumph .

Overall ,   I intend that the vermiculite method acting has edged it , but not exactly a conclusive termination .   To be fair , the author whose recommend method this is , did not say it was better than seed on plain compost , a long - abide technique for a rationality , just that it is easy to grapple , and foolproof as far as watering is concerned which overall lead to unspoilt probability of successful issue . I’m going to stick with the vermiculite method acting , in all cases these seeds germinate first , and it seems to have worked well for me in general .

This is the last update for Trial 01 .
